We left our lodge at 6:00 AM to see the gorillas. this road is the bumpiest road I have ever seen or felt. Let me add that I just arrived in Africa and that comment will be amended later.
We drove to the meeting point where all seekers of gorillas meet. There are hundreds of us and many land rovers parked nearby. The gorillas are watching us from somewhere high up in the mountains, I suppose.
There are three circular huts or buildings here with bathroom facilities. We are in the Mgahinga Gorilla national Park. There is coffee and such for those who need it. Everyone here is excited of course.
I sat next to a young woman and spoke to her for a few moments. She ended up coming with us in our land rover to see the gorillas. I have that knack, I guess.
We then met our guide at the meeting point. We all climbed back into our land rovers and went to a location where a troop of gorillas were waiting for us. We hiked through the blooming potato fields and up into the high jungle. the scenery was beautiful. High mountains looming all around us and women working in the fields with their children watching us intently. After a few hours of hiking we were told that the gorillas were near by.
We soon found the gorillas leisurely eating and snoozing. They are not disturbed by us. Two silver backs were among a group of several gorillas of different ages and sizes. They eat slowly and methodically as they watch their harem and kids. We spent an hour among them taking videos and photos with wonder. They are larger when you are near them and they are more powerful than one can imagine.
Those photos and videos are on Facebook at R.C. Hand and will be up here soon.
