We are now in the Serengeti. The word “Serengeti” comes from the Massai word “seringit” which means endless plain or the place where the land moves forever. Perhaps that last meaning is referring to the grasses and plants always moving in the wind.
We are retracing our steps up into the volcano and then going down the back side from the rim.
We have traveled through several climate zones and different types of native plants on these journeys.
The Serengeti plain is made up of 5,700 square miles of riverine bush, acacia woods and savanna grasslands.
The roads continue to be bumpy and dusty. That just adds to the adventure and change of circumstance. We seldom see roads like these at home. We were in a Land Rover from 7:30 AM to 4:30 today.
We saw many different animals including giraffes, hippos, jackals, elephants, zebras and many lions. No one goes hungry here.
Some lie close enough to the road to touch. Some lie in the shadows of kopjes, the rock outcroppings around us and rising out of the crater floor. They pay littler attention to us as they know that they are in fact, the king of the jungle.
We arrived at our camp today that will be our home for the next four days. It is fine camp with electricity and modern facilities. It is the middle of nowhere.
The hyrax run for cover as humans approach. They are the closet living relative to the elephant and seem to be in good supply here.
We will be alone here along with our crew of drivers, guides and camp staff. Civilization lies miles and many hours away. If things go badly here we are on our own until we can get to an airport. Sadly this great adventure is slowly coming to the end.
Their are early morning hot air balloon rides here for those who wish to do that. We did this many years ago in Australia.
We are all getting along well and have left the modern world and it’s problems behind us.
I apologize for being remiss in putting these postings up sooner, but I have many things on the boil at the moment.
Remember to come to Facebook and Instagram at R.C. Hand to see the videos of my Africa trip and my podcast appearances. I will put them up here in time.
I just did a podcast interview on extrodinaryamerica2020 with Indraneel Cosmos Samaddar. It will be up on my Facebook page after being edited by him.
His podcast is about successful people and how they overcame their hardships and went on to succeed. His podcasts are available on many platforms, Spotify being one of them.
Thanks for stopping by, R.C. Hand
