March 25, 2025 – “Joe in Africa”

More of Chapter 9

Chad had just received a large bonus and pay raise. It it wasn’t time to get married now, it never would be. He had decided that Suzan was the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. His mother mother was putting a good deal of pressure on him as well.

Chad thrust his right hand into his jacket pocket and pulled out a little blue box. He set it on the table between the two of them and smiled. He opened the box. Suzan looked down on the ring sitting inside of the box and impressed. The only question was how many carats it was. It was a large, very large solitaire. She knew it was plenty big. Two carats at least. It was nearly as large a stone as she had ever seen outside of a jewelry store window.

That was who Chad was and the size of diamond spoke volumes to Suzan.

“Will you marry me Suzan?”

Suzan placed her left hand over on Chad’s right hand that rested in front of her on the table cloth and close to the blue box. She squeezed his had.

“Of course I will. I love you.” Suzan had thought about this moment often from her childhood years until now. The man who might be seated across from her and ask that important question had always been an unknown. But she knew the moment would arrive one day. That someday was now.

She had thought about a life with Joe and compared it to a life with Chad. It was an easy choice from where she was now seated.

“Great Suzan. where do you want to go for our honeymoon?”

“Can we go to East Africa?”

Sure, but when do you want to go?”

“When shall we get married and where?”

“That depends, Suzan. Do you want a big fancy wedding and a long honeymoon? What do you want?”

“Well Chad, if I had my druthers, I say a small wedding now and a grand reception when we come back from our honeymoon.”

“I’m fine with that Suzan, but my parents may have a say in that.”

“I’ll do what ever they want, Chad. But I have always wanted to go to East Africa if it were possible. It’s been a dream of mine for years.”

That was a lie. She had only just recently seen the countries on the map, thanks to Joe. he loved the Mountain Gorillas and the landscape around the massive volcanoes. It seemed primeval.

Suzan had little imagination when it came to planning trips or holidays. Her forte was planning parties and shopping sprees.

“East Africa it is then dear. When shall we go?”

“Well the weather is perfect for the next month and a half. After that the rains arrive,” Suzan suggested.

“We could get our visas and be on our way in a few weeks. You have a passport don’t you Chad?”

“Of course I do Suzan, I travel for business and pleasure often. But not much too far away with my work and all.”

“Great than Chad. Let me get the paper work sorted out for us will have our visas in a week or so.”

Can you get away from work for the honeymoon?”

My father owns the company Suzan, I think I might be able to.

Suzan didn’t tell Chad that she already had hers.
