July 15, 2025 – “Joe in Africa”

He didn’t think that he was on the precipice of another love affair at the moment.

After several minutes Joe had seen Charlene come into the airport. She had climbed out of her town car after waiting for the driver to open the door.

She tipped the driver as a porter came in here direction with a luggage cart. The two men loaded the cart and the driver left. She didn’t know his name but he was often the driver that Chad sent for her. There were others but this fellow came the most often. He was older and well behaved. He spoke only when spoken to or as needed. She liked that about him.

The porter arrived with his cart and a big smile.

“I’m on TWA flight 21 to Kigali, Rwanda. Do you know what gate I’m supposed to wait at?” “No miss, but we will find out soon enough, just follow me inside and will soon find out. It’s getting cold out here.” The thought of arriving in Africa seemed to warm her a little, or so she thought as the porter spoke of the weather.

They ambled through the double glass doors which opened wide as they approached them. The airport was cavernous and seemed like a different world. It might even have it’s own weather, she pondered as she followed the older man across the wide hall to the first flight information board.

Men and women were walking quickly in all directions. Some seemed lost. Charlene arrived in plenty of time had no need to hurry. She didn’t like to be rushed under any circumstances. That was one of the things that she liked about Joe. He was a good boss, always organized and in control, but in a respectful and polite way.

The porter looked up with squinted eyes and read the board methodically. He had done this a million times over forty years. Now it seemed to be getting a little more difficult each year, or so he thought.

“Looks like Gate 15 is the one you need miss.” “Thanks so much. You have been a great help. I can take it from her.” She dug five dollars out of her purse as they had marched across the room.

She pressed the five dollars into his hand and walked away with the luggage trolly trailing behind her. The porter saw the five dollar bill and and was thrilled. He would have to tell his buddies about this. He wondered if she were important. Maybe she works for The United nations, he thought, as he walked back to the curb and the infinite line of parked cars waiting for him.

Charlene was a self assured traveler and headed for the gate at a good clip. She didn’t look back.

That’s the end of Chapter Fifteen. There’s much more to come.

Dont forget that “The House On The Cliff” is now on Amazon and in Audible production.

If you enjoy this little secret spot in the universe, tell your friends. I’m trying to grow my audience and it isn’t easy. There are hundreds of thousands of unknown authors out there.

We are like grains of sand on a warm beach. Too many to count and the world just walks over us without even noticing.

I have been working on this story and am still ahead of myself, if that is possible.

As always, thanks for stopping by. More on Friday.
