Dec.24, 2025 – “Joe in Africa”

More of Chapter 13

She has a list of friends that will make your head spin. She does big parties like this all of the time. May I call her and ask for her help with our wedding?” “Oh god Chad, could you. I’m at my wits end.” “Sure, I think I know just the place. Do you want to try to do this inside or outside in a park like setting?” “Outside would be wonderful if the weather would just hold for a few days before we leave on our honeymoon.”

Chad took his phone out of his Levi’s and pressed the button for his mother’s private line. Her phone was soon ringing. Hello, this is the Sterling residence. “Hello Sylvia, this is Chad, is my mother there?” “Yes, she just came in from golfing with your father. I was just checking her messages. You now how she is on the golf course. I just hope the market doesn’t crash when she’s golfing one day. She’ll miss the whole thing. I’ll get her to come to this phone. She’s getting a drink at the moment.”

Chad waited for his mother. He was used to waiting for his mother. She did things on her own timeline and always in her own way.

“Hello Chad darling how are you? ” “Fine mother, Suzan and I need a favor.” “Anything son, what is it?” Well, we’ve settled on the number of guests and now we need a planner and a venue that suits us and in two weeks or less.” “Not a problem son, Manny can help us. He owes us a favor or two. What’s the number of guests to be?”

We’re thinking five-hundred counting our guests and yours. We only have around a hundred coming on our side, so that gives you four-hundred.” “Well, lets make it seven-hundred and give you a hundred and fifty guests for you. If you can’t get that many to come it will hardly be noticed with a large crowd like that.

I can think of three estates of friends right off the top of my head that would love to have you married there. Jonny Davis, is one that comes to mind right off the bat. All of them would fit the bill. Do you have a best man?” “Charlie Higgins of course.” “Yes, I suspected that.” “Mother, he is much better now. I can almost guarantee that there will be no issues with him at the function.”

“Well, that’s too bad. He is always there for comic relief, if nothing else. If it rains the police will need four wheel drive vehicles to track him down and arrest him.” “Come on mother, he isn’t that bad.” “I know, just half that bad. I think we should do it here at our place. we have plenty of room for a large wedding and the parking parking as well.”

“Thanks mom, I hadn’t thought of that. I didn’t want to pout you out.” “I’ll make a couple of calls and get things rolling son. Are we doing formal or casual?” “I think formal mother. This is Suzan’s big day after all and she has dreamed of it for years.” “Yes dear, do it right or don’t do it, I always say. I’ll get back to you in twenty minutes with everything settled. Oh Chad, this is wonderful. I just hope we can find someone like Suzan for your brother one day.”

“Chad put the phone back in is pocket and came back into the living room of his apartment where Suzan sat waiting for him. “My mom will call back in twenty minutes with all of the details. We’re doing it outside and in formal attire.” “Oh Chad, thanks so much. This is wonderful. I was starting to get frustrated and panicked over this.” “Don’t worry, my mother is an expert at things like this.”

The phone rang in nineteen minutes. Call it done son. Seven hundred guests in formal attire and chicken or steak for them to choose from. It will be her at our estate in twelve days. I talked to your father and he is thrilled to death about it being done here. He’s also thrilled not to be involved in the wedding process. Our place is just thirty miles outside the city with tons of grass to park on. Put suzan on the phone so we can talk invitations.”

Chad handed the phone to Suzan and sat down across the room with the news on. The market was up and he had made a few bucks by the end of the week, after all. The market had been down a little for a few days.

“I wish we had a little more time Suzan, but don’t worry. This will turn out to be a wonderful wedding day for you and Chad, I promise. My guy Manny has an army of workers and all he does is weddings and larger events. We’re going to tackle this like it’s a trade show. Five days and it will be ready to go. Do you want block letters, script or calligraphy? What do you think?”

I want to thank all of for coming to read my nonsense. I will be off for a few days in the desert.

Hopefully away from this rain.
