June 6, 2026 – “Joe in Africa”

Chapter Twelve

Suzan sat at the same table in the back corner of The Odeon, where she and Chad could often be found. They had first gone there several months ago. It was very expensive and had an extensive wine list.

Suzan had been there with one of her single girlfriends, several times, looking for something or someone a little more interesting than what they had seen else ware.

Their plan was to grab a few drinks and spend some time at upscale restaurants that had up and comers on the fast track and wealthy men for customers. Hopefully there were still some eligible bachelors in this packed, vertical city, called New York. Sometimes it seemed to them that there weren’t many around any more. It had sounded like a sound plan. That’s how she had met Chad Williams.

The two women called themselves, “the better dealers,” for reasons obvious to the both of them. Nancy had a steady man and had been sure she would be engaged in weeks. That was months ago. They had been together for two years.

She loved Bart, but he was slow on the trigger with offering up an engagement ring, and she had just about given up on getting married to him. “He’s just about missed the boat as far as I can tell, Suzan. I’ve waited long enough. The next fellow with a nice suit, who slaps down a “Gold Card” card and looks almost in my direction has a pretty good chance to help me end this disaster with you know who.”

“Oh, I get it Nancy.” “Well, at least you’re wearing a ring, Suzan. Where have you put it by the way?”

“It’s in my jewelry box. I thought Joe was the one but now I think he was, “almost” the guy. He’s less interested in climbing the corporate ladder than I had hoped. I think I need to keep my options open.”

“Are you going to tell him at some point?” “Not until something better comes along. I hope it’s soon. I can’t keep lying to him like this forever. Its hard work and eventually I’m going to screw up and that will be a freaking mess.”

“Well, that’s going to break his heart. I know how he feels about you. Every time I’m with you two he is beaming. When you leave for a minute he starts telling me how much he loves you. It’s almost more than I can bare. I know who you are.”

“Well, Joe’s a grown man in some respects and things happen for a reason. He isn’t going anywhere and that’s reason enough for me to keep my options open.”

More to come tomorrow.

I used to have a life before I met these awful people.

Why can’t they just leave me alone. They never stop talking.
