June 6, 2026 – “Joe in Africa”

Chapter Eleven

Charlene was a perfect secretary for Joe. He had much on his plate at work and focused on that most of the time. He took his work home with him often to keep up. His administrative skills sufficient but he was still newish at his work and needed to do some of his tasks at home to keep up. He had just been promoted to this new position a year ago.

Charlene paid some of his bills for him from a separate checking account he had set up for that purpose, as well as getting his monthly bus and subway passes. She also knew about the life insurance policies that Joe had bought on himself and Suzan for $350,000.00 on each of them. She paid the premiums from this special account each month. Joe was a little absent minded and this made his life a little easier.

Buying the insurance was a smart and proper move for an upwardly mobile couple to make at the time of their marriage. It gave each of them a sense of security incase of an unforeseen disaster, or so Suzan had said many times.

Charlene wondered if it was still in affect after the two former lovers had broken up. Surely it would be some time before Joe got around to cancelling it. That was who he was no matter what he said or thought recently. He was predictable if nothing else.

What were the two policies worth, again?” she wondered as she dialed the phone number of the insurance company.

“Security Life Insurance, how may I direct your call?” “I need to talk to someone two new policies in farce.” “One moment please.” A man with a deep, soothing voice soon came on the line.

How might I help you miss?” “Well, this may sound odd, but I am an executive secretary and pay many of my bosses bills as well these two life insurance policies from his special account. It is now moving to another bank. I just need to find out what I need to do to keep paying on these policies from the new account.” They talked for sometime and Mr. Killian made everything work out perfect for Charlene.

He made sure she had the right policy numbers and the pass word to get into the new account. Joe would think the policies had been cancelled while she kept them in force. He would have no record of the payments being made. It was a simple process. She was done in less than half an hour.

Thank you Mr. Killian, you’ve been a great help. That’s one more item off my list.

On the way home from work that afternoon, as Charlene sat on the subway, She wondered what she should pack for this very special trip. There was only so much room for luggage on this adventure safari.

After some serious thought, she decided to skimp on her sleeping attire.
