We returned to the Angkor Wat site to explore the ancient city of Angkor Thom. It is surrounded by an 8meter high wall made of giant stones with carved elephants on its face.
This was the lat capitaal of the Khmer Empire under the reign of Jayavarman Vll. Here is the Banyon Temple and the Baphuon, the royal enclosure, and the terraces of the Elephants of the Leper King.
The last stop in the complex is Tra Prohm Temple. It has been left in the state of disrepair that it was found in. It is covered in the giant roots of the Ficus trees and looks as if giant snakes are trying to slowly strangle the buildings. The sunshine is broken by the leaves of the giant trees as we try to focus and take pictures. It is breath taking. The carvings around the entry doors are perfect and finely done. The entire surface of this complex has been carved to perfection.
Tonight we go to the circus.
